Gunmen kill at least 10 villagers in northeast Nigeria

A remote village in the northeast Nigerian state of Taraba has been targeted by unknown gunmen. Resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people and widespread destruction. The attack, which occurred on Friday in the village of Binnari in the Karim Lamido area, saw the gunmen arrive on approximately 50 motorcycles, with two men on each bike.

Police officers are currently searching for additional casualties in the surrounding bush. Although their efforts have been hindered by allegations of inadequate protection for rural communities. Amnesty International has accused the authorities of failing to safeguard these communities.

This highlights a growing trend of attacks by armed groups across several regions of Nigeria.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor Mshelizah, the attackers targeted shops and looted cash, foodstuffs, and other provisions. They also seized motorcycles abandoned by people fleeing the scene. The incident has raised concerns about the activities of kidnap gangs, jihadists, and separatists wreaking havoc in Nigeria.

Community leaders have expressed shock and fear following the attack, with many residents describing the scene as chaotic and disorienting. Survivors, including Isiyaku Musa, reported that people were running in different directions to escape the attack, with some still missing.

Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International's Nigeria office, has called for an impartial investigation into the killings. Sanusi stated that the NGO had spoken to bereaved families, who reported that up to 50 people had died. He accused the authorities of leaving rural communities vulnerable to repeated atrocities committed by gunmen with impunity.

Police have recovered 10 bodies with gunshot wounds, although the attackers had fled the scene by the time officers arrived. The police are continuing to search the surrounding bush for additional casualties, with the potential for the death toll to rise further.

The terrain is difficult, and the attackers are familiar with it, making it challenging for the police to track them down.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor, Mshelizah said. that the police were able to disperse the unknown gunmen. However, warned that the situation remained volatile.

The police are working to restore calm in the area. However, the incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in protecting rural communities from attacks by armed groups.

Nigeria continues to grapple with attacks by armed groups across several regions, including the northwest, northeast, and central regions. The government has faced criticism for its response to these incidents, with many calling for greater support for rural communities.

The attack on Binnari village is the latest in a series of incidents that have raised concerns about the security situation in Nigeria. The government must take immediate action to address these concerns and provide adequate protection for rural communities.
