Fin Whales Thrive in Ice-Free East Greenland Waters
Fin whales have taken advantage of the warming waters off East Greenland, allowing them to feast on fish and krill in ice-free seas.
Study Reveals 'Major Ecological Regime Shift' in Ocean Environment
The researchers tracked hundreds of fin whales, humpbacks, and minke whales using satellite tracking devices and observed from boats as they feed in the newly accessible areas.
'The changes in the region are probably the most radical we can see anywhere in the subarctic,' said Prof Mads Peter Heide-Jørgensen of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources.
Whales' Shift to Warming Waters Drives 'Feeding Frenzies'
The study found that fin whales consume at least 800,000 tonnes of fish and krill during a summer feeding season, adapting to the warming waters of East Greenland.
However, other Arctic species are losing habitat due to climate change, raising concerns about the impact on local populations.
