Waymo Unveils Next-Gen Robotaxi Ojai with Modular Self-Driving
Waymo has taken a significant step towards expanding its commercial fleet with the launch of its next-generation robotaxi, the Ojai.
Ojai: Modular Self-Driving System and Redesigned UI
The Ojai boasts Waymo's sixth-generation self-driving system, designed to work across multiple vehicle types, making it an attractive option for mass scale. The robotaxi also features a redesigned user interface with Google's Gemini AI as in-car assistant.
Waymo has about 300 Ojai robotaxis in its commercial fleet today, according to the company spokesperson. Once these vehicles are fully deployed, riders will have two options: the new Ojai and the older Jaguar I-Pace robotaxi.

Ojai's Impact on Waymo's Strategy
The Ojai is expected to cut costs for Waymo, with a modular self-driving system critical to its commercial strategy. However, tariffs on imported vehicles add cost, which may impact the company's profitability. New York-based research firm MoffettNathanson estimates that the number of Ojai imports will more than double Waymo's current Jaguar fleet.
Waymo plans to roll out the Ojai in Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego later this year, expanding its operations in key US cities. As Waymo continues to push towards mass scale, only time will tell if the Ojai will propel the company forward.
