Alia Shawkat has been waiting years to star in a stoner comedy, and it's finally here. She plays the lead role in Dylan Meyer's 'The Wrong Girls', which follows three women navigating love, careers, and weed in their mid-to-late-30s.
The film was written 13 years ago, but it took a while to get made due to financing issues and the changing landscape of the indie film industry. Shawkat, who is also pregnant, had to pause her commitment to the project before it finally hit theaters.
Shawkat says that the film's weed-smoking scenes were too realistic for her to ignore, even if she was hiding her pregnancy at the time. 'There is so much weed smoking in this movie,' she laughs.
The film has been a labor of love for Shawkat and co-star Kristen Stewart, who also directed her own film recently. The two actresses have been friends since their days on 'The Runaways' and have been circling each other ever since.

The film has also been praised for its realistic take on weed culture, with Shawkat saying that it's a topic that's often stigmatized or misrepresented in films. 'It's just so funny,' she says of the film's portrayal of women getting high.
Shawkat and Stewart have been vocal about the challenges faced The two actresses are part of a growing movement to promote more women-led films and challenge the status quo in the industry.
