Ukrainian Youth Find Hope in War-Torn Landscapes
Documentary filmmaker James Marcus Haney is taking his camera to the Toronto Film Festival this year, but instead of sneaking into music festivals like he did years ago, he's capturing a different kind of story.
Haney's new documentary, Black Sunflowers, follows Ukrainian youth as they navigate the challenges of growing up under martial law and facing war on multiple fronts.
The film shows young Ukrainians finding solace in underground raves, car racing, and relationships, but also facing harsh realities like compulsory military service and the loss of loved ones.
Working with a Ukrainian film crew, Haney captures intimate moments of everyday life amidst the chaos of war, from an army truck driver racing his car down city streets to a young amputee soldier finding freedom on a high-energy dance floor.
