YouTube increases monetization requirements for new creators in 2027.

YouTube is doubling key Partner Program monetization thresholds for new creators from February 2027, requiring 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views. Shorts revenue sharing will also require 10 million views over 90 days.

Value Beyond Ad Revenue

Filmmakers and independent creators say YouTube’s value often lies less in ad revenue than in audience building, commissions, sponsorships, and distribution.

Some argue the new rolling thresholds could reward publishing frequency over creative quality, while others see them as reasonable. YouTube is also expanding ways to earn through Shopping, brand deals, and subscription revenue.
