Trumps Secret Plane Switch: A Threat to the President?
When President Donald Trump boarded Air Force One on July 8th, it was not his usual mode of transportation. The plane's departure from Turkey was shrouded in secrecy, and it wasn't until later that day that Trump revealed the true reason for the switch.
What Happened?
According to Trump, he was told by Secret Service and military personnel that he needed to take a different flight due to a possible threat. 'I just have to do what they say,' he said, when asked about the decision.
The revelation has raised questions about whether those left on the decoy plane were in danger. Trump claimed that the jet he boarded instead could have been at greater risk because it would be the target of a potential attack.
US intelligence had reportedly detected a credible Iranian threat to fire a missile at the plane, and a person near the NATO summit had been seen with a shoulder-fired missile. Journalists and some White House staff on board were unaware of the president's secret flight.
The incident comes as tensions between the US and Iran remain high following a breakdown in negotiations between Washington and Tehran to end the war. Trump has previously stated that he was Iran's 'number one target' during the NATO summit in Ankara.
When asked about the threat, Trump said: 'I guess there was a threat out there.' He also claimed to receive many threats, adding: 'I have a lot of threats that you don't know about.'
The clandestine manoeuvre has sparked debate about the president's security and the measures taken by the US government to protect him. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the safety of the President is always at risk.
