YouTube will now count a view as soon as a video starts playing

YouTube has announced a significant change to its view counting policy, which could have a major impact on creators and advertisers.

The platform will now count views as soon as a video starts playing or someone enters a live broadcast. This means that public view counts may no longer be an accurate measure of a video's popularity.

According to YouTube, the change is intended to eliminate confusion around multiple view counting systems across different formats and provide creators with a more accurate understanding of their exposure.

The shift could lead to significantly increased view counts, especially for videos that only briefly capture viewers' attention. This could make it harder for creators to determine how popular their videos are using public view counts.

However, YouTube will still offer an 'Engaged views' metric through its Analytics tools, which will show how many viewers chose to continue watching a video.

The change takes effect on August 24 and does not impact creators' earnings or eligibility for monetization through the YouTube Partner Program.

Despite the changes, some users are expressing concern that it could make it harder for new creators to enter and remain in the platform's monetization program.

YouTube has announced another creator-focused change, requiring new creators to meet higher thresholds to begin earning money from ads and subscriptions next year.

Creamers who want to start earning on the platform will need at least 8,000 qualified watch hours over the past year or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Currently, creators need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours over the past year or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views over the past 90 days.

As with any change to the platform's policies, there may be some adjustment period for both creators and advertisers. It remains to be seen how this new policy will impact the YouTube community in the long run.
