Wuornos Netflix Connection Sparks Debate Over Female Rage and Legacy of Lizzie Borden

Aileen Wuornos, a notorious serial killer executed in 2002, made a surprise appearance on Netflix's Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, leaving viewers questioning the connection between the two women. Wuornos was known for killing seven men across central Florida over 12 months, starting in 1989. Meanwhile, Borden was accused of murdering her parents with an ax in 1892.

Wuornos' character appears at the start and end of the final episode, where she discusses her motivations for violence. "Trying to defile my character, make me look like a monster, deranged or something like a Jeffrey Dahmer, which I’m not." she says in an interview.

Ella Beatty, the actress playing Lizzie Borden, revealed that Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan were interested in exploring a possible connection between Wuornos and Borden. "The show is exploring a legacy of female rage and reaction to the set of circumstances that they are presented with," Beatty said.

Beatty also discussed how each season of Monster has been an exercise in understanding the psychology of its subjects. "I knew from the beginning that Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan were really interested in exploring what brings a woman to the point of violence."

Natalie Merchant's 1995 song Carnival plays during Wuornos' execution, highlighting her admiration for the musician. Wuornos had requested that Merchant's music be played at her funeral.

The connection between Wuornos and Borden has sparked debate over the legacy of female rage and violence. While Borden was acquitted of murdering her parents, Wuornos was sentenced to death penalty in 1992 and executed in 2002.
