US on pace to surpass $6 trillion in merchandise trade driven by AI data center demand

The United States is on pace to top the $6 trillion milestone in merchandise trade in 2026, a remarkable feat largely driven by the computer hardware needs for AI data centers.

Key Development

With the first half of 2026 already totaling $2.98 trillion, the second half would need to account for 50.28% of the annual total, or about $3.02 trillion, to reach this ambitious goal.

This trend is not new; since 2018, when the nation first surpassed $4 trillion, the second half has consistently accounted for at least 50.28% of annual US trade in every year but one.

The exception was 2025, a year marked by President Trump's Liberation Day tariffs against the world, which led to substantial front-loading of shipments intended to avoid higher duties.

Looking back, it's impressive to note that U.S. trade first surpassed $1 trillion in 1993, followed by $2 trillion in 2004, and then the $3 trillion barrier was broken just three years later in 2007.

The nation then topped $4 trillion for the first time in 2018 and reached $5 trillion in just four years, with 2022 marking a significant milestone.

If the US reaches $6 trillion this year, the import category that will stand out is the broad computer category, which includes laptops, desktops, tablets, and servers. This growth was so impressive that Chicago's O'Hare International Airport became the nation's top port for the first time, with a significant amount of computer hardware from Taiwan entering through its gates.
