AI-focused VC firm Thrive Capital prioritizes fundamentals over hype in investment strategy.

Joshua Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital, has spoken out against his peers in Silicon Valley for prioritizing hype over investment discipline in the AI space.

Independent Thinking

Kushner argues that Thrive Capital takes a different approach to investing in AI, focusing on companies with strong fundamentals and long-term potential rather than chasing fleeting trends or 'outliers'.

'We are independent because markets move between fear and enthusiasm, and neither is a substitute for judgment,' Kushner writes. This approach allows Thrive to concentrate its time, capital, and energy on the people and ideas it believes in most.

A New Perspective on Disruption

Kushner also challenges the conventional wisdom that venture capital firms are in the business of disrupting incumbents. Instead, he argues that many industries will be transformed from the inside out by AI-driven innovation.

This perspective is reflected in Thrive's deepening relationship with OpenAI, which has become a major investor in the VC firm's spinout, Thrive Holdings. Thrive Holdings works with OpenAI to give companies an AI makeover and has seen significant success in this approach.

Success Stories

Thrive's strategy is working, with its $516 million early-stage fund now worth more than $3.7 billion as of the end of June. The firm has also made successful bets on other industry-leading startups, including Anduril and SpaceX.
