Cyberattacks on US water utilities linked to Iranian hackers cause widespread alarm nationwide.

Several water utilities in the United States have been hit by cyberattacks, causing alarm in the country.

Widespread Attacks Raise Concerns

The attacks, allegedly carried out by Iranian hackers, have targeted facilities in around a dozen states, leaving experts worried about the potential for widespread disruptions to critical infrastructure.

The US has more than 150,000 water systems, some of which are run by local companies. However, this number may not be an advantage against cyber threats, as many of these systems lack the necessary resources and cybersecurity expertise to protect themselves.

Cybersecurity experts believe that Iranian hackers often target low-hanging fruit in opportunistic isolated attacks, making this hacking campaign a significant escalation.

Since news of the initial attacks broke two weeks ago, there have been several developments. On July 28, Minnesota authorities announced that water treatment plants in over 30 communities were hit by coordinated cyberattacks.

Two days later, the FBI reported incidents at water and wastewater utility companies in at least seven states, with some cases resulting in degraded water operations.

Other states affected include Arkansas, Georgia, New Jersey, and Michigan. While the US government has not officially named the culprit behind the attacks, many believe it to be the Iranian government.

The first incidents in Minnesota came days after the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned of Iranian hackers targeting internet-connected devices in water systems and the energy sector.

President Donald Trump has denied any involvement by Iran, instead blaming the state of Minnesota. However, a recent report from Wired suggests that the Water Information Sharing and Analysis Center (WaterISAC) has confirmed that the attacks align with the hacking campaign CISA warned about, effectively accusing the Iranian government.
