MUMBAI — Tata Trusts plans to build new public institutions directly rather than act only as a funding body. Chairman Noel Tata outlined this new operating strategy in the organisation's FY26 annual report.

The philanthropic group draws regular dividends from holding company Tata Sons. The strategic shift emerges while governance differences between the Trusts and the Tata Sons board continue in Mumbai.

The Trusts distributed a total of Rs 1,556 crore during the FY26 financial year. Out of that sum, institutional grants accounted for Rs 1,353 crore. Meanwhile, direct grants to individuals stood at Rs 203 crore.

Historically, the entity functioned primarily as a grant-making body for outside initiatives. Noel Tata explained that the organization must now create long-term assets directly.

Writing in the annual report, he stated the goal was "not simply to support an existing effort, but to build institutions and models that can become enduring public assets in their own right".

He linked this operational direction to the core philosophy of the group's early leaders. Noel Tata wrote that the original founders pursued social progress ahead of corporate size.

"Our founders did not set out to build the largest group of companies," he noted in the report. "They believed that enterprise carried with it a responsibility to society, and that the true measure of progress was an improvement in the quality of people’s lives."

Tata Trusts established several major national landmarks in earlier decades. Notable examples include the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and Tata Hospital in Mumbai.

Moving forward, the Trusts identified education as an immediate operational priority. Noel, Tata said. India needs domestic centers to nurture talent.

Strong local academic hubs will help prevent students from moving overseas for studies.

The group also plans significant expansions across the medical sector. The Trusts are currently working to set up a dedicated network of 40 to 50 not-for-profit general hospitals.
