Migrant groups misled by Instagram accounts trying to cross Ceuta border.

Many migrants have attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave Ceuta, with some losing their lives in the attempt.

The Role of Instagram

Several Instagram accounts have been identified as driving the influx of migrants to Ceuta by offering paid advice on crossing the border.

The accounts, which claim to have helped "many people", show the short swim around the Morocco-Ceuta border fence as safe and easy, despite the fact that people have drowned trying to make the crossing and take much longer routes.

Our research suggests that this has contributed to the crisis, alongside other factors such as misinformation about changes to Spanish immigration law and allegations about weak border controls.

The BBC's Top Comment podcast has identified dozens of Instagram profiles that portray Ceuta as a viable route to mainland Europe, despite it being an enclave with strict borders.

One account, which claimed to have helped "many people", asked for payment of 5000 dirhams upfront (£400) in exchange for information on how to cross safely.

The account also requested payment via bank account using a specific money transfer service.

When we contacted the BBC's Top Comment podcast, they confirmed that dozens of Instagram profiles were involved and asked us not to share any further information about the accounts.

The crisis in Ceuta has sparked tensions between EU nations who share open borders as well as criticism of the Spanish government.

It is essential to note that attempting to cross the border without proper authorization is extremely dangerous and can result in serious harm or even death.
