French national Yann Vezilier granted presidential pardon in Mali.
President Assimi Goïta has granted a presidential pardon to French national Yann Vezilier, who was accused of plotting an alleged coup in Mali.
Pardoning a High-Risk Individual
The move comes after Vezilier was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the alleged plot, which aimed to destabilise President Goïta's government on behalf of the French intelligence service.
It is unclear what prompted Mali's decision to pardon Vezilier, who had been accused of working with army generals and dozens of soldiers to undermine the government.
The Malian government stated that the pardon does not call into question the facts established by an adversarial judgment rendered during a trial, where all rights of the defence were respected.
Vezilier's case highlights the ongoing security crisis in Mali, which has been fuelled by an Islamist insurgency since 2012.
