Belgian construction workers have made an incredible discovery while renovating a house in the country.

The builders found a hidden stash of gold bars and coins sealed into the walls of its cellar, reportedly worth some €9m (£7.6m).

The construction workers were drilling to lay new sewage pipes when they stumbled upon the treasure trove.

Local police have launched an investigation into the discovery, and both the builders and a local charity that owns the site are being considered for ownership of the loot.

Officers have moved the gold to a secure location to prevent anyone from trying to find more treasure on the site.

The builders were shocked by their discovery, with one worker, Kobe, describing it as 'something bigger' than initially thought.

'€9m – you simply can't keep that hidden,' he said.

Another worker, Mario, noted that keeping such a large amount of gold for themselves was not an option.
