Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed his Belgian counterpart Bart De Wever to New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations.

During their meeting at Hyderabad House, PM Modi emphasized the shared values of India and Belgium, including the rule of law, dialogue, and diplomacy. He highlighted the importance of supporting efforts for peace and eradicating terrorism from its roots.

"The world is facing a phase of great upheaval, with conflicts persisting in many parts of the globe," said PM Modi. "However, India's economy has maintained its momentum, recording a growth of 7.8 per cent in the last quarter."

PM Modi also highlighted the expansion of cooperation beyond traditional sectors to strategic areas such as defence and clean energy. The two countries are working together on modern defence equipment like the Zorawar tank.

"We are developing one of the world's largest green ammonia projects in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh," said PM Modi. "A clean energy future and a reliable supply chain are our shared priorities."

The Prime Minister also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on renewable energy with Belgium, which will give new momentum to their sustainability cooperation.

De Wever's visit marks his first trip to India since taking office in February 2025, and it is also the first official visit of a Belgian Prime Minister to India.

"We will work together to connect Belgium's IMEC Institute with India's semiconductor ecosystem," said PM Modi. "This partnership has made remarkable progress over the past decade."

Prime Minister De Wever will also visit Mumbai on September 4, highlighting the strong economic foundations of the partnership and underscoring the significance of the diamond trade in India-Belgium relations.

The two sides reviewed and signed pacts on defence industrial cooperation, which will bring Belgian technology to India.
