According to game director Ion Hazzikostas, the game's goal is to offer something that appeals to a lot of people who aren't currently well-served by what they see from WoW.

"Maybe modern Wow isn't quite their speed, and when they look at Classic, they played that game already, or it's a little bit too janky and too 2004," he continues. "for the millions of people who have had their accounts lapse" in Classic – that plus newcomers, of course.

Blizzard is embarking on a mission to expand its fan base, a goal championed by lead developer Hazzikostas. The company's aim is to increase its audience reach without alienating existing players. This approach is not taken lightly, as Hazzikostas acknowledges the importance of maintaining a unified community.

The World of Warcraft team has previously experimented with revamping the game, as seen in the Classic update. Historically, the franchise has catered to distinct audiences, with Classic offering a slower-paced experience that has resonated with a dedicated following.
