Fr Willie Doyle, a British Army chaplain during World War One, will be recognized for his heroism and devotion to his faith on Sunday. Doyle, a Dublin native, was known for his bravery and selflessness, often risking his own life to comfort wounded comrades and carry them to safety.
Doyle's time with the 16th (Irish) Division of the British Army spanned nearly two years. With a significant portion of that time spent in the trenches on the Western Front. His life was tragically cut short at the Battle of Passchendaele on August 16, 1917.
At that time, he was fatally injured while attempting to assist two wounded soldiers.

The Fr Willie Doyle Association, founded by Patrick Kenny, a business school lecturer, has been instrumental in advocating for Doyle's canonisation. Kenny has stated that Doyle lived a life of great heroism and holiness. And that his bravery and selflessness were an inspiration to those around him.
The Diocese of Meath conducted a thorough investigation into Doyle's life and writings, which included a theological commission and a historical commission. The investigation resulted in over 3,500 pages of documentation, which will be submitted to the Vatican for further review.
The Bishop of Meath, Tom Deenihan, will lead a ceremony in Mullingar Cathedral. There, the final public session of the tribunal of inquiry will take place. The ceremony will mark an important milestone in the canonisation process, and will bring the documentation to the attention of the Vatican.
