Mingma G, a veteran mountain guide with two decades of experience within the Sherpa community, initially viewed Nims-famed for his record-breaking feat of climbing the world's 14 highest peaks in six months as documented in Netflix’s 14 Peaks—with skepticism.

"In the beginning, I had the feeling he was very arrogant," Mingma G admitted. However, after they decided to unite their efforts to share the K2 record, that perception shifted entirely.

He came to describe Nims, a former Gurkha and British Special Forces soldier, as "very kind-hearted, one of the most beautiful human beings I've met." This professional relationship stood against a backdrop of public scrutiny; in 2024, the New York Times published sexual misconduct allegations against Purja. Through his legal counsel and in a subsequent lengthy interview, Purja categorically denied these claims, labeling them "false and defamatory." Despite these complexities, Nims remained a pivotal figure who elevated the global standing of Nepalese climbers.

On July 30, amidst perfect weather, a group of 10 climbers, including Nims and his childhood friend Kilu, began their ascent of Broad Peak. At 08:30, Mingma G spoke with Kilu, who expressed confidence in the snow conditions; they planned to reconnect at the next camp. Shortly after, a thunderous crack signaled a massive avalanche.

Trekkers observing the ascent lost sight of the climbers, and their guide alerted base camp. Mingma G, positioned 7,300 meters up on K2, sensed disaster when he received no word from his friend and client Wang Zhong. As altitude data from trackers began to plummet, the grim reality set in.

After a sleepless night, drone footage confirmed the presence of bodies. Mingma G abandoned his K2 expedition, committed to the recovery. The operation was grueling; after initial logistical failures regarding helicopter support, the team proceeded on foot.

Facing constant threats of further avalanches and shifting glaciers, the rescuers recovered the bodies, including Nadhira Al Harthy and Pur Bahadur Gurung, and eventually brought Nims, Kilu, and Gyaljen Sherpa home, with their remains arriving in Kathmandu on August 11. Other climbers, such as Sohail Sakhi and Mallory Geis, were recovered days later, while Nawang Thindu Sherpa remains on the mountain.
