The Argentinian government has begun legal action against the UK's exploration of oil and gas fields north of the Falkland Islands. A move that heightens tensions between the two nations over the sovereignty of the self-governing British territory.

According to Argentinian President Javier Milei, the request lodged with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea aims to block activity authorised "illegallyWe will do whatever it takes to support them," in a clear indication of Argentina's determination to protect its interests in the region.

The dispute over the Falkland Islands has been ongoing for over 40 years. With successive Argentine governments pressing their claim with varying degrees of aggression and diplomacy. The UK maintains that the islands are a British overseas territory, while Argentina claims sovereignty over the territory.

The Falkland Islands have been a source of contention between Argentina and the UK since the 1982 Falklands War. In which Argentina invaded the islands and was subsequently defeated by a British military task force.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea will consider the dispute and make a number of orders against the UK, including halting new exploration permits. The tribunal's decision is expected to be made in 2028, when the Sea Lion oilfield is expected to start pumping.

Argentina has also threatened to impose economic sanctions on firms exploiting oil close to the Falkland Islands, a move that has been condemned by the UK as "economic coercion" against the people of the Falkland Islands.

The dispute over the Falkland Islands has significant implications for the region's economy. With the Sea Lion oilfield estimated to contain 1.7 billion barrels of oil. The field is expected to generate huge revenues for the roughly 3,500 inhabitants of the islands.
