The Supreme Court of India on Monday sought a detailed report from the Karnataka government on a plea filed

A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan issued notice to the state administration after hearing arguments regarding the actor living conditions behind bars.

Senior Counsel Mukul Rohatgi Submissions

Appearing on behalf of the actor, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi submitted that prison authorities have placed Darshan in a dark quarantine cell without adequate natural light or ventilation. He argued that the actor is being deprived of essential nutrition and basic facilities because the court had previously observed that high-profile inmates must not receive preferential treatment.

Rohatgi submitted before the bench that following the court observation against five-star treatment, authorities have withheld even fundamental basic amenities, urging the apex court to ensure humane conditions in accordance with prison manual standards.

Renukaswamy Murder Case Background

Darshan, along with actress Pavithra Gowda and several associates, was arrested in June 2024 in connection with the abduction and murder of 33-year-old fan Renukaswamy. According to police investigators, the victim was allegedly targeted for sending derogatory online messages, kept captive in a Bengaluru shed for three days, and tortured before his body was recovered from a stormwater drain.

Judicial Scrutiny and Next Steps

The Supreme Court had earlier set aside Darshan interim medical bail granted Taking formal note of the latest grievances regarding jail conditions, the apex court directed the state to submit its official response clarifying the facilities provided to the undertrial prisoner.
