Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been formally charged with treason following a raid on a property linked to him and his party, the New Hope Party (NRPUP), amidst heightened political tensions within the country. The charges were announced Saturday night

The charges against Brian Mundubile stem from the recent presidential election, which saw incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema secure a second term. Following the election results, authorities accused Mundubile’s NRPUP party of planning an armed insurgency, a claim vehemently denied On Thursday, Mundubile was arrested following a raid on a property in Lusaka, resulting in the death of a former cabinet minister and numerous arrests of other politicians.

Milner Katolo announced that 17 individuals, including Makebi Zulu, had also been charged with treason. He stated that Mundubile is looking forward to answering the accusation in court.
