Kim Dong-ho, the founder of BIFF, will receive the prize at the festival's opening ceremony on Oct. 6.
Briefly, Kim established BIFF in 1996 and ran the event for its first 14 years.
He is known for his combination of skills as a bureaucrat and cinephile, which helped establish BIFF’s independence.
The festival became a meeting ground and incubator for Korean directors who contributed significantly to the broader Korean cultural wave.
Kim also directed his first feature film, Mr. Kim Goes to the Cinema, at 88 years old.
He will be honored at an opening ceremony that also hands Michelle Yeoh the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award and Ann Hui the Chanel-backed Camellia Award.
