Julie Newmars original Catwoman episode would have ended in tragedy for Eleen.

Julie Newmar's iconic portrayal of Catwoman on 'Batman' preceded her starring role in the second season of 'Star Trek.' However, the original ending of her episode, 'Friday's Child,' would have been a far cry from the triumphant conclusion we know today.

Alternate Ending Revealed

In an interview with the Television Academy, writer D.C. Fontana revealed that she had initially envisioned a much darker and more complex ending for the episode.

According to Fontana, the original plot would have seen Captain Kirk and his crew protecting Eleen, the pregnant widow of Capella IV's slain leader, from her captors. However, in this version, Eleen was not meant to survive.

The Capellan culture places a greater value on male heirs than women, leading Eleen to offer her newborn son to her captors in exchange for her freedom. Unfortunately, she would have been executed anyway.

Fontana explained that she wanted to explore the harsh realities of motherhood and the societal pressures placed on women in this culture. 'I wanted to tell a story about a woman who would even use a newborn child to save herself,' she said.

However, when Fontana presented her script to 'Star Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry, he had other plans. Roddenberry preferred a more traditional view of motherhood, one that emphasized the strong bond between mothers and their children.

'I really wanted a very strong woman, and we got Julie Newmar, who was great,' Roddenberry said. 'It was really about a woman who was willing even to use her child to serve herself.'

Fontana was disappointed with the final outcome but ultimately accepted Roddenberry's vision.
