Australia Launches Gun Buyback Scheme to Tackle Growing Gun Violence Concerns

Australia is taking steps to address growing concerns over gun violence after a deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The New South Wales state will launch a gun buyback scheme, offering cash incentives for firearm owners to surrender their guns.

The scheme, which will begin on November 2, aims to encourage hundreds of thousands of guns to be surrendered as part of a broader push for stricter firearm laws.

Gun ownership reforms have already been introduced in the state, limiting individuals to owning four firearms - although some people, such as farmers and sports shooters, can own up to 10.

The buyback scheme will target those who have more weapons than permitted by the new rules, or who are no longer covered by a licence. Those handing over a revolver will receive AUS$1,000, while an air rifle will fetch AUS$450.

The National Gun BuyBack Scheme is being jointly funded by New South Wales and the federal government, with terms having been reduced from five years to two.

Australian authorities had pledged sweeping firearm law reforms after 15 people were shot dead at a Jewish festival on Sydney's Bondi Beach last December. The move is seen as a major step towards addressing the growing concern over gun violence in Australia.
