The Rise of the iPhone and Futurama's Response
In 2007, the first iPhone model hit stores, but it wasn't until the release of the iPhone 3G in 2008 that the device's popularity began to skyrocket. Futurama, which had been cancelled in 2003, saw an opportunity to capitalize on this trend and incorporate it into their show.
Writer Patric Verrone explained to Cracked in 2025 how the idea for 'Attack of the Killer App,' the first episode conceived for the second official run of Futurama, was born out of this cultural phenomenon. 'So, we thought we'd do an episode about that tech development and take advantage of the pervasive cultural phenomenon that was,' Verrone said.
The Birth of a Meme
According to Verrone, the scene where Fry shoves a fat stack of cash at the employee and yells, 'Shut up and take my money!' was inspired 'Every time a new iPhone came out, there was a line around the block to get the newest model, even though it probably had very little that was new,' Verrone recalled.
Actors Billy West and Patric Verrone discussed the comedic inspiration behind Fry's character in an interview with Cracked. West stated, 'Fry is just yelling at him to take his money. We all understand that urgency concerning a few things in our lives, but this spelled it out perfectly.' The iconic line has since become a meme, symbolizing the excitement and FOMO surrounding new technology.

Legacy of Futurama's Cultural Relevance
The success of 'Shut up and take my money' is a testament to Futurama's commitment to staying current with popular culture. As Verrone noted, 'The show always made it a point to keep its comedy current, a difficult feat in animation when projects can take a year or more to come together.'
This exclusive interview provides insight into the creative process behind one of television's most memorable memes. From the inspiration behind 'Attack of the Killer App' to the evolution of Fry's character, Verrone shares his perspective on how Futurama remained relevant in an ever-changing world.
As the tech landscape continues to evolve, it's clear that Futurama's irreverent humor and willingness to tackle current events have left a lasting impact on popular culture. 'Shut up and take my money' will forever be etched in our collective consciousness as a symbol of the excitement and FOMO surrounding new technology.
With its unique blend of satire, wit, and pop culture references, Futurama continues to captivate audiences today. The success of 'Attack of the Killer App' serves as a reminder that even the most iconic memes often have a rich backstory and a clever creative mind behind them.
