The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the winners of the 72nd National Film Awards on Saturday, with Yami Gautam taking home the top honour for her role in Article 370. The event was held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, where the awards were streamed live on PIB India’s YouTube channel.

The winners were announced among a list of outstanding achievements in feature and non-feature films, writing on cinema, as well as categories such as acting, direction, screenplay, music, cinematography, editing, and other technical disciplines. The National Film Awards are considered India’s highest honour for excellence in cinema.

Yami Gautam won the Best Actress award for her performance in Article 370, while Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the Best Actor honour for their films Chandu Champion and Bramayugam, respectively. The awards were given to films certified

Rajkumar Periasamy was named Best Director, Kalki 2898 AD won Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Srikanth was adjudged Best Hindi Film, and Captain Miller received the award for Best Film Promoting National and Social Values.

Other notable winners include Ropashree Varkady for Best Supporting Actress in Mithya, Sachana Namidass for Maharaja, Sanjay Mishra for Best Supporting Actor in Bhakshak, and Gitashree Chakraborty, Tapomoy Deb, Riddhiman Banerjee, Arundev Pothula, and Athish S Shetty for Best Child Artist.

Other Winners

The awards also recognised excellence in cinematography with Shehnad Jalaal winning for Bramayugam, while Sukumar won the award for Best Screenplay for Pushpa 2. Venky Atluri received the award for Best Dialogue Writer, and Deepali Noor & Sheetal Sharma were named Best Costume Designer.

The year 2024 witnessed a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films across languages.

Globally celebrated titles such as All We Imagine As Light and Laapataa Ladies shone a spotlight on Indian cinema, while films like Pushpa 2: The Rule, Stree 2, Hanu Man, Manjummel Boys and Premalu dominated the box office.
