Teenager Ethan Griffiths, 14, credits his father's experience with lymphoma for his strategy to cope with the return of his cancer. Ethan, a rugby player, was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma in January and underwent chemotherapy before being declared cancer-free in May, only to have an "aggressive" relapse.
His family faced "immeasurable stress" as he joined a clinical trial at Bristol Royal Hospital Children for patients with B-cell nHL who had not responded to treatment or had relapsed.

"I would just switch off and he'd be losing his head next to me," Ethan said, nodding to his dad. His strategy for staying calm was simple: "Stick my earphones in, listen to music and try to fall asleep." Ethan's father, Lloyd, a project manager, said his son probably got his "stoic side" from mum Rusanne.
But the 56-year-old also credited his own experience with a different type of lymphoma for helping Ethan cope.
Ethan's treatment regimen entailed a grueling cycle of intensive chemotherapy. Punctuated by a stem cell transplant, which utilized cells harvested earlier in the process. The procedure necessitated several weeks of hospitalization under strict protective protocols.
Ethan's experience was marked by a sense of monotony, as the prolonged isolation took its toll.
