Deepening Investigation into Madhya Pradesh Spurious Liquor Deaths

The investigation into the tragic hooch deaths in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district has widened significantly, shifting its focus from local street-level vendors to the primary architects behind the lethal manufacturing operation. Authorities have confirmed that 30 individuals are currently under scrutiny, with 17 arrests made as of the latest police update.

Among those taken into custody is a prominent Karni Sena leader, a licensed liquor contractor, and a notorious history-sheeter with links to neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, suggesting an inter-state network operating with calculated disregard for human life.

The Manufacturing Nexus

Sagar Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujaniya detailed the collaborative efforts of the accused. The primary figures identified are Chandrabhan Singh, the Divisional President of the Karni Sena; Manish Lodhi, also known as Yashwant Thakur, who held a liquor license for a vend at Barethi; and Shivanjay Rajput, a relative of the Karni Sena leader.

According to statements provided during interrogations, the group orchestrated the production of counterfeit liquor in agricultural fields located in Tatarwara. The timing of this operation, which coincided with the Krishna Janmashtami festival, allowed the culprits to move large volumes of illicit product under the cover of increased local demand.

Investigators have recovered significant evidence, including empty bottles, specific brand labels, and chemical processing materials, from the rural site. Approximately 50 cases of liquor branded as 'Sagar Gold' were reportedly manufactured and distributed through a local village network before the health crisis erupted.

Tactical Apprehension of a Key Smuggler

A critical breakthrough in the case occurred following the tracking of Ravi Lakhera, a 45-year-old history-sheeter. Following intelligence reports that placed Lakhera near the Hanuman Tong Temple along the Banda-Barayatha road, Barayatha police launched a tactical operation to cordon off the forested area. A tense standoff ensued, during which Lakhera allegedly fired upon officers at least three times.

Police returned fire, striking Lakhera in the leg before successfully taking him into custody. During the search, officers recovered a country-made 12-bore pistol and various spent casings, while two other accomplices managed to flee into the darkness.

Lakhera, who has a criminal record spanning 25 cases, is believed to have provided the technical expertise required for sourcing spirit and mixing toxic concoctions, potentially leveraging past experience from similar illicit operations in the Lalitpur region.

Inter-State Tensions and Accountability

The investigation is now grappling with the jurisdictional complexities of the supply chain. While Madhya Pradesh authorities suspect a direct connection to Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, officials across the state border have disputed these claims, requesting empirical evidence before accepting the association.

Meanwhile, the human toll of the disaster has risen to 15 fatalities, with multiple survivors still recovering in medical facilities. Victims from villages such as Nauraj, Patan, Ghooghra Khurd, and Bamura were among the first to show symptoms after consuming the tainted alcohol on or after September 5.

The police response has been comprehensive, involving the registration of three separate FIRs at the Banda and Vinayaka police stations. As investigators tighten the net around the remaining 13 suspects, they are also probing why the network continued to operate even after the first reports of mass illness emerged, noting that many operatives attempted to destroy evidence of the spurious inventory immediately following the onset of the tragedy.
