At least 44 people have sustained injuries, one of them critically, after a passenger train derailed in northern France on Friday evening. The accident occurred near the commune of Cléon, situated just south of the city of Rouen.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed that the train was operating on the route between Rouen and Caen in Normandy, carrying approximately 180 passengers at the time of the incident.

Local authorities moved swiftly to activate a mass-casualty response plan shortly after the crash, which took place just before 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT). Among those injured, an 18-year-old woman was airlifted to a medical facility in critical condition.
