A national period of mourning has been declared in Norway following Harald's death. The new king will participate in a consecration service with his wife, Queen Mette-Marit, which is a stripped-down version of a coronation.

Haakon's sister, Märtha Louise, has also faced controversy for remarrying an American self-styled shaman, while her son from a previous relationship has appealed to take on more royal duties.

National Mourning Declared

The new king will face many challenges in the coming months, including balancing his official duties with his wife's ongoing health issues. Doctors have stated that Queen Mette-Marit is not yet stable enough to fully participate in royal activities until next year.

Norwegian royal experts believe that King Haakon VIII is respected and hard-working, despite the turbulence surrounding his family. They say he will be able to move forward despite the challenges.

Although Harald remained popular until his death, a poll for newspaper Aftenposten earlier this year suggested that support for the monarchy had dropped from 72% in 2024 to 54%.

However, Norwegian royal experts told the BBC that the new king, while facing questions about the turbulence surrounding his family, was respected, hard-working and, they believed, able to move forward despite the challenges.
