India Offers Support Amid Flash Floods in Nepal, at Least 400 Missing

Nepal's devastating flash floods have left at least 400 travellers missing, including 105 Indians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday. The Indian PM spoke with his counterpart Balendra Shah and assured him of India’s full support and humanitarian assistance in the wake of the disaster.

In a statement on social media, Modi said he conveyed condolences to Shah on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. He also stated that India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal.

India's embassy in Kathmandu has been coordinating with the Government of Nepal to strengthen rescue and relief efforts for Indian nationals affected The embassy has put out two helpline numbers, 911 and 9111, for assistance and information related to Indian citizens in need. Rescue Efforts Continue

A total of 400 people are currently missing in Nepal, including 105 Indians who were heading for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in Tibet. Most of the Indians were pilgrims on their way to the sacred site when the floods hit the Rasuwa district bordering Tibet.

The US, Malaysia, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and the Netherlands are also among the countries with missing nationals.

The Nepal Tourism Board has also issued a helpline number, 1234, for tourists in need of assistance. Local media reports said the board, along with the Tourist Police and tourism stakeholders, are working to verify the whereabouts and safety status of those who were in or travelling through the affected areas.

A sudden and massive flood swept through two central Nepal districts bordering Tibet, killing seven people and causing extensive devastation at settlements along the river. The flood surged through the Bhote Koshi river at around 9 am local time coming from the Tibet side, affecting Rasuwa and Dhading districts bordering Tibet and Nuwakot district southwest of Kathmandu.

International Response

India has assured its full support to Nepal in this difficult time. The Indian PM also stated that rescue teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts with the Government of Nepal.
