Detective Elliot Stablers character departure from Law & Order: SVU due to contract negotiations.

Having aired 27 seasons over nearly three decades, 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' has become accustomed to seeing actors come and go. Even so, some cast exits were far more surprising and heartbreaking than others.

The Departure of Fan Favorites

Most recently, the long-running NBC crime drama said goodbye to Octavio Pisano – who played Detective Joe Velasco — and Juliana Martinez — who portrayed Detective Kate Silva, starting with Season 26. Since 'Law & Order: SVU' premiered its pilot episode in 1999, some main cast members have been relegated to guest roles, while others have left the show entirely.

One of the most significant departures was that of Christopher Meloni, who played Detective Elliot Stabler and was a series regular in the first 12 seasons. The announcement of his exit in 2011 completely blindsided many, including his co-star Mariska Hargitay's character, Olivia Benson.

According to reports, Meloni left due to failed contract negotiations for his future appearances on the show. He offered to take on a reduced role but ultimately decided to have his character written out for the time being. Meloni later reprised his role in the franchise when he headlined 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' from 2021 to its cancellation in 2025.

Another founding cast member, Richard Belzer, portrayed Detective John Munch for 15 years. His exit in 2013 was unexpected and sad for many fans of the show. The writers planned the conclusion of Munch's story in advance, believing that stepping away from the NYPD was a natural choice for the character in the later stages of his career.

Danny Pino played Detective Nick Amaro, who emerged as a popular character after his Season 13 debut in 2011. However, his tenure on the show didn't last long, and he retired from the force after being shot in a courtroom in the Season 16 finale.

Pino's exit stunned audiences, but neither behind-the-scenes drama nor contract disagreements compelled him to leave. The character's frequent impulsivity and extreme encounters with suspects made his departure inevitable at that point.

Still, Pino made a brief return to the show in 2021 when he played Amaro in an episode of Season 23, which remains the lone instance he returned to the show after leaving.
