Bollywood Films Script New Stories After Box Office Flops
When it comes to show business, box office results can be as dramatic as the films themselves. This year has seen two films that initially tanked but then became overnight sensations.
Flopped Films with a Second Chance
The dramas Main Vaapas Aaunga and Jaya Janaki Nayaka were written off after poor box office performances, but their fortunes changed when social media users started sharing emotional reactions to the films' climax.
Imtiaz Ali's Main Vaapas Aaunga was released in June with a slow start, earning only ₹1 crore on its first day. However, it later gained momentum thanks to viral reels and audience interactions, eventually crossing ₹100 crores worldwide.
The 2026 Chinese animated film also initially received mixed reviews but found an unexpected boost in popularity after people started mocking it, leading to a surge in cinema admissions and a total collection of roughly $1 million.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 2023 film, based on the true story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, followed a similar trajectory. It initially earned ₹1 crore at the box office but later gained traction due to strong word-of-mouth, crossing ₹69 crores worldwide.
Audience Engagement and Social Media
The success stories of these films highlight the power of audience engagement on social media platforms like YouTube. Rakul Preet Singh-Bellamkonda Srinivas's Jaya Janaki Nayaka became the first full-length feature film to cross 1 billion views on a single YouTube upload, nine years after its initial release.
Such stories show how even the most unlikely films can find new life with the right audience engagement and marketing strategies.
