Tesla and Base Power Revolutionize Home Battery Market
Homeowners in Texas can now lease affordable battery solutions from Tesla and Base Power, two companies leading the charge in the growing home battery market.
The Rise of Virtual Power Plants
Virtual power plants (VPPs) are aggregating and coordinating distributed energy resources like batteries to behave on the grid like a single large power plant. This technology is helping utilities fill gaps during periods of high demand, reducing the need for expensive peaker plants.
VPP operators charge batteries when electricity rates are low and sell stored power back to the grid at a profit when demand sends prices soaring. The operator pockets a chunk of those profits, passing some on to consumers in the form of low electricity prices or cheap backup batteries.

Declining Battery Costs Drive Innovation
The cost of battery technology has been declining steadily, making it more accessible to homeowners. Tesla and Base Power have introduced leasing plans that cut monthly prices 2 kilowatt-hours of Base Power batteries for $19.
Base Power has a deal with CoServ to build a 100 megawatt VPP in under 12 months, a feat that would take traditional power plants two to four years to complete.
Speed and Cost Advantages
VPPs offer a speed advantage over traditional power plants, which can take years to deploy. They also reduce infrastructure costs for utilities, as they don’t need to spend as much building new power lines and other infrastructure to support them.
