Liechtenstein has taken a significant step towards modernizing its royal succession rules, paving the way for women to ascend the throne.

The tiny European country, nestled between Switzerland and Austria, has announced that it is changing its rule of succession from male primogeniture to absolute primogeniture.

This means that the first-born child, regardless of sex, will now become heir to the throne, followed by a princess or prince.

The change applies only to descendants of Hereditary Prince Alois and his wife, Hereditary Princess Sophie, ensuring that the new rule does not affect the current line of succession.

Hereditary Prince Alois, who has carried out most official royal duties for the past two decades, welcomed the change, stating that it would allow for a more prepared leader to take the reins.

Liechtenstein's unique position as a doubly-landlocked country with significant political powers makes this move particularly noteworthy, following in the footsteps of Britain's 2011 succession law changes.
