Eleonor Alejandra Marin Mendoza released from prison in Mexico.

Eleonor Alejandra Marin Mendoza, the woman at the center of Netflix's documentary A Child of My Own, has been living a life of freedom in Mexico since her release from prison.

Inside the Shocking Case

In 2008, Mendoza, then 25, was facing pressure from her family to become a mother after several miscarriages. She faked her pregnancy and even created fake medical reports to convince her husband and in-laws that she was expecting.

Mendoza's plan seemed to be working until Mayra Navarro, the woman she claimed had agreed to give her the baby, denied ever meeting or agreeing to hand over the child.

After the baby was born in June 2009, Mendoza took the child and went to a hotel in Mexico City with her husband. Police later arrested the couple, and Mendoza was found guilty of kidnapping on November 9, 2011, and sentenced to more than 13 years in prison.

Mendoza was released from prison in 2022, but it's not clear if she was released in 2023 as reported by some sources. In an interview, Mendoza spoke about her past actions, saying 'I was drawn into problems that got bigger and bigger... until there was no way out. No turning back.'

She added, 'Before, I think my desire to be a mum was more about pleasing others. What else is out there beyond being a mum? But I finally realised there's so much more to live for.'
