Eric Barone, the visionary behind Stardew Valley, has been candid about the weight of expectation surrounding his upcoming project, Haunted Chocolatier, in a recent conversation with GQ. Having established a reputation for crafting a game that exuded a sense of rustic charm. Barone now finds himself navigating the challenges of replicating that initial spark.

By prioritizing quality over expediency, he's striving to maintain the high standards that defined his breakout success. This was initially conceived as a humble means of honing his programming skills during a period of unemployment.

Barone, who joined GamesRadar+ in May 2022, spoke about the challenges of creating a game that meets the high expectations of his fans. "I've been struggling with that," he says, "because I really want to recapture that feeling that I had when I was making Stardew Valley. Back then, there was no audience, there was no precedent.

Everyone's watching me, and if I don't do things a certain way, it might disappoint millions of people."

Haunted Chocolatier is a game for Stardew Valley players who yearn for the mines. Barone describes it as a game that will be released when it's ready, not before. "I won't compromise on the quality of the game by rushing it or releasing it too early," he says.

Barone's creative process has changed since the success of Stardew Valley. He now has to consider the impact of his game on his fans. "It's kind of hard to fathom just how many people have played it, and the impact it's had," he says.

"It was not part of the plan."

Despite the pressure, Barone is committed to delivering a game that meets his high standards. Haunted Chocolatier is slowly taking shape at a pace Barone is setting for himself. Pressure or not.
