Indian Sailor Killed in Oman Waters Amid US-Israel Conflict

Indian sailor Nahim Ajij Gandhar, 25, from Gujarat's Porbandar, has been killed after an unidentified projectile struck a cargo ship in Omani waters, leaving 13 crew members safe and sound. According to the Union Minister of Ports. Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, the incident occurred on November 2, amidst the ongoing conflict in the region.

Gandhar was on board Al Jusufi, an Indian-flagged Mechanised Sailing Vessel. This was carrying 14 Indian crew members and 950 metric tonnes of cargo when it was struck. The ship had been anchored in the West Asian region for the past two years due to a lack of major consignments to bring to India.

A situation that has raised concerns about the safety of Indian sailors working abroad.

According to Gandhar Akbar Ahmed Sumbhaniya, the ship's tindal, the projectile struck the vessel near the cabin room at approximately 4 pm local time. The boat's right side was facing the Omani shoreline. Gandhar sustained injuries to his left leg and shoulder but remained conscious during the rescue.

The Oman Coast Guard successfully rescued all 13 crew members, but Gandhar succumbed to his injuries while being transported in an ambulance. Sumbhaniya estimates the loss to be around Rs 50 lakh, and insurance companies have historically refused coverage to wooden sailing vessels.

India has reported 22 fatalities, including 14 mariners, in the ongoing conflict, with Gandhar being the 15th Indian sailor to succumb to the violence. The Indian government has expressed growing unease over a spate of attacks on commercial vessels in the area. This highlights the need for urgent de-escalation of tensions.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, diplomats are working towards a diplomatic resolution, with the aim of restoring peace and stability to the region.

The incident has raised concerns about the need for greater cooperation between India and Oman to prevent such incidents in the future. The Indian government is exploring options to provide compensation to the families of the deceased crew members. This includes an initial payment of Rs 50 lakh.

The incident is a reminder of the risks faced by Indian sailors working abroad and the importance of providing them with adequate support and protection.

The Indian government will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the rights of its citizens are protected and their safety is ensured. The attack on the cargo ship has also sparked a debate about the need for enhanced security measures to protect Indian sailors and the importance of cooperation between India and Oman in preventing such incidents.
