Fable, the latest offering from Playground Games, is an action RPG that has been making waves with its innovative combat system. In this hands-on demo, we got to try out the game's various loadouts and spells, and while there were some standout moments, there are still areas that need improvement.
Fable's combat is all about experimentation and combining spells with your chosen weapon. This approach leads to some truly magical moments, like using a spell to disappear behind enemies before unleashing a heavy melee spin attack.
The variety of spells available is impressive, and the ability to swap them out as you progress through the game will give players plenty of options. For related coverage, explore our detailed analysis on Technology and Digital Systems.
Combat System Delights
However, there are some areas that need refinement. Enemy AI can be frustrating at times, particularly when it comes to crossbow-wielding skeletons. While they may seem like a minor issue, it can lead to an uneven playing field and make the game feel less challenging.
Another area for improvement is character movement. The stiffness of my character's head and neck during runs was noticeable, and the automatic enemy lock-on sometimes feels like it's jamming. These issues may not be deal-breakers, but they can still detract from the overall experience.
Fable has all the ingredients to deliver a great RPG experience, but it needs to iron out some of these minor issues. With player choice and experimentation at its core, Fable has the potential to be a game worth playing. We'll have to wait and see how Playground Games addresses these areas in the coming months.
Room for Improvement

In her spare time, you'll likely find Jasmine thinking/talking about Resident Evil, purchasing another book she's unlikely to read, or complaining about the weather.
Warhammers have never been my thing in RPGs, and I expected the same to be stated of my approach to Fable . But, loading into my hands-on combat demo, I found myself falling for a hefty hammer over my usual go-to dagger.
